Applications to open for VTC’s 2019/20 diversified VPET programmes

Providing multiple study pathways, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is offering Secondary 6 students around 17,000 places in the 2019/20 academic year on more than 140 full-time Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma of Foundation Studies, Diploma of Vocational Education and Diploma programmes. The application period will run from this Friday, 23 November 2018 until 28 February 2019.

In academic year 2019/20, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), and the International Culinary Institute (ICI) will provide some 100 Higher Diploma programmes, responding to manpower demands of the 21st Century to nurture talents conversant with smart city innovative technologies and all-round professionals equipped with versatile knowledge and skills.

To support the development of smart cities and innovative technologies, VTC will launch a number of new programmes in the coming academic year, including IVE Higher Diploma programmes in AI and Mobile Applications Development and IVE Smart Technologies and Cyberspace Applications. The former is designed to train specialists in AI and software development while the latter to nurture talents proficient in innovative technologies including Internet of Things, big data analytics, cyber security and cloud services.

Following the launch of interdisciplinary programmes last year, VTC is to offer two more interdisciplinary programmes in the coming academic year, namely Higher Diploma in Global Supply Chain and Higher Diploma in Fitness and Health Nutrition. A new Higher Diploma in Illustration will also be launched to train specialised talent with creativity and skills in creative and digital illustration.

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) will offer over 20 vocationally-oriented degree programmes. Among them, 12 will be covered by the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP), in areas of Fashion Design, Product Design, Landscape Architecture, Culinary Arts and Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Management, Horticulture and Landscape Management, Surveying, Sports and Recreation Management, Building Services Engineering, Multimedia Technology and Innovation, and Information and Communications Technology. Eligible local students will be entitled to an annual subsidy amounting to HK$41,700 or HK$72,800. Application for the SSSDP programmes can be made through Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) till 5 December.

In addition, THEi will launch the new Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Aircraft Engineering to address students’ aspirations in profession of aircraft engineering and maintenance.

To cater to the different aspirations and progression needs of Secondary 6 students, VTC will offer eight streams under Diploma of Foundation Studies programme in addition to the Degree and Higher Diploma courses. The Civil Service Bureau has accepted the VTC Diploma of Foundation Studies as a qualification eligible for applying for positions in the civil service that require five HKDSE subjects at Level 2, including English Language and Chinese Language as an entry requirement.

Moreover, the Youth College will offer 17 Diploma of Vocational Education programmes to provide seamless and flexible progression pathways for students and equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to pave the way for future success in their studies and career. Hotel and Tourism Institute (HTI), Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI), and International Culinary Institute (ICI) will also provide seven diploma programmes, including the new ICI Diploma in International Culinary Arts that covers Continental, Mediterranean and Asian dishes. The employment-focused diploma programmes help students to work for entry into respective professions. (General entrance requirements for different levels of VTC programmes are set out in Annex 1.)

Students can apply through the VTC Admissions Home Page (http://www.vtc.edu.hk/admission) and submit application for programmes of the above institutes (see Annex 2). Applicants have to make their course choices on application and interviews will be arranged after the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) next year if applicable.

Starting this Friday, 23 November, THEi, IVE, HKDI, and the Youth College will organise Info Days at which campus tours, taster programmes, study and career consultations, programme briefings and parents’ talks will be arranged. These events will help students and their parents better understand VTC programmes, which provide a good combination of professional knowledge, practical experience, diversified study and career pathways.
