VTC to join Education & Careers Expo nurturing professional talent for the new era

25 January 2018

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) will participate in the four-day Education & Careers Expo to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai from 1 to 4 February, providing one-stop information for young people and in-service workers on the progression pathways available to them through vocational and professional education and training (VPET). Interested Secondary 6 students can also apply for the programmes on the spot.

Adopting the theme of “Skilling for the Future”, the VTC will this year showcase products of technological innovation developed by VTC students, prizewinning work pieces and its innovative teaching facilities. Together they testify to the VTC’s drive to promote interdisciplinary development with the aim of equipping the younger generation with the requisite professional knowledge and skills of the 21stCentury. The VTC booth is conveniently located near the entrance of Hall 1. Students of the Higher Diploma in Exhibition Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), a member institution of the VTC, have participated in the conceptual design of the VTC Booth this year – a testimony to the balanced mix of theory and practice in the curriculum.

To enhance learning effectiveness, VTC applies technologies to teaching. The booth will exhibit teaching facilities driven by innovative technologies merging professional knowledge of different disciplines. They will include simulated workplace training in aircraft maintenance for VTC students riding on professional knowledge and the VR/AR-enabled engineering education system of the Engineering Discipline. Also featured is the Automated External Defibrillators (AED) Stimulation Application designed by students and teachers of the Applied Science Discipline of Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE). The application deploys healthcare knowledge and Mixed Reality technologies to enable users to experience the use of AED to save cardiac arrest patients.

In addition, EatCult, a mobile app concept design, will be showcased. Construed by Winnie WONG, who graduated from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Advertising programme offered by the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), a member institution of VTC, the design marries creative advertising concepts and smartphone app technologies, offering a one-stop platform for green catering services from private kitchens. It won the Junior Award in the Communication Design category of the Red Dot Awards, hailed as the Oscars of the design industry.

Meanwhile, the Rain Garden designed by THEi students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Landscape Architecture is purposed to reduce the use of water for irrigation, and alleviate pressure on the drainage system in rainy seasons thereby buttressing the city’s defence against extreme weather. The design has been adopted by the Development Bureau.

In the Skills Excellence Zone that enhances interaction with members of the public, visitors can play an air hockey game with the robot “Air Hockey Go!” through a computer. They can also try out “Smily”, a device using the latest knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with human-computer interaction, to enhance customer services at shopping malls. The Occupation Dictionary webpage – a tool that helps students and working adults to explore information of further studies and careers – will also be shown.

VTC education adviser will hold seminar to advise visitors on course information and the progression pathways available at the VTC. There will also be various demonstrations including hair-styling, makeup, culinary and cocktail mixing. Visitors can also try VR games of replacing aircraft tyres. In addition, the VTC will partner with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to present talks on the Arts and Culture and Banking and Finance Theme Days, at which industry veterans will share their insights on the prospects of different industries (please see Annex 2 & 3).

The VTC booth will provide counselling services on progression options and programme information at a number of VTC member institutions, including THEi, IVE, HKDI, the International Culinary Institute (ICI), Hotel and Tourism Institute (HTI), Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) and Youth College. Secondary 6 students will be able to apply on the spot through the VTC online admission system. The deadline for application is 28 February.
