THEi confers bachelor degrees on over 600 graduates

16 December 2017

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), held its graduation ceremony today (16 December), conferring bachelor degrees on some 650 graduates.

Addressing the audience, the Guest of Honour, Member of the Board of Governors of THEi Dr Patrick POON Sun-cheong said, “Standing up here, I can see many glowing faces filled with joy, pride and anticipation. You may wonder where life will bring you next. Whatever you choose, be confident that THEi has prepared you to be work ready and be different.” Dr Poon also said with continuous and dedicated effort, THEi gave young people the opportunity to find professions that interested them and suited their abilities. He was confident that THEi graduates were already one step ahead of other graduates.

VTC Chairman Dr Clement CHEN, who presented the graduates with their degree certificates, noted in his welcome address that “Vocational and professional education and training (VPET) has long been a critical source in addressing the manpower needs of Hong Kong industries, providing great impetus for the city’s economic development. In response to the society’s needs for professionals with specialised skills, VTC set up THEi to extend the value chain of VPET to degree level.”

Dr Chen went on to say a promising sign of THEi fulfilling its mission was that the number of its programmes under Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions or Sectors (SSSDP) Scheme was on the rise, which would benefit more THEi students. He considered this as “a vote of confidence” on THEi programmes meeting Hong Kong’s social and economic needs.

The some 650 graduates conferred with THEi degrees today come from ten programmes of the Faculties of Design and Environment, Management and Hospitality as well as Science and Technology. The graduates will provide new blood for industries, demonstrating the fruits of VPET in paving the way forward for aspiring young people.

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) is a member of VTC Group. It offers vocationally-oriented degree programmes across three faculties: Design and Environment, Management and Hospitality, and Science and Technology. The programmes are offered in areas where the VTC has strengths, and which are also growth industries not only in Hong Kong but also across the region. They feature the synthesis of knowledge acquisition and practical applications that enable students to grow into professionally-competent graduates. With its strong links with industry partners, THEi provides students with a vital platform for enhanced development.
