THEi graduate wins “Industry Oscar” Red Dot Design Award with innovative healthy eating app concept

27 November 2017

Winnie WONG, who graduated this year from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Advertising programme offered by the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), has won the Junior Award in the Communication Design category of the Red Dot Awards, hailed as the Oscars of the design industry. She is the first THEi student to reap such an honour in this top international design competition.

At the end of last month, Winnie attended the prize presentation ceremony held in Germany where she was able to compare notes and exchange ideas with industry veterans from different countries. Her winning entry was also showcased to the public at the ceremony and will now be taken on a roving exhibition around the globe.

Founded by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfale in 1955, the Red Dot Design Awards are divided into three categories, namely Product Design, Communication Design and Design Concept. This year more than 8,000 submissions from 50 countries were received for the Communication Design category from global enterprises, professional advertising agencies and product design companies. Together they competed for the distinctions of Red Dot, Red Dot: Best of the Best and the top award, Red Dot: Grand Prix, as well as a Junior Award specially created for up and coming young designers who have graduated from design institutes within the past two years.

To accommodate the busy lives of city dwellers and at the same time their preference for healthy eating, Winnie came up with a conceptual mobile app by the name of “EatCult”, which offers a one-stop platform for green catering services from private kitchens. “The design of this conceptual programme is aimed at providing much-loved home-cooked meals for busy city people,” she explained. “Through the app, users can choose quality, fresh ingredients from local organic farms and distributors including fruit and vegetables, seafood and poultry for the preparation of healthy dishes by preferred private kitchens. Catering services can also be arranged with the app. The customer will be able to enjoy fresh and healthy food comfortably at home.” She looks forward to the commercialisation of her brainchild.

Winning an international award thrilled Winnie. At the prize presentation ceremony in Berlin, she had the opportunity to exchange ideas with top-notch designers from around the world, which she found most valuable. The curriculum of THEi proved very enriching, she said, as it provided practical professional knowledge closely attuned to industry developments, on top of the design concepts that were taught. THEi teachers maintain close links with the industry, and industry leaders have been invited over from time to time to share their experiences, so she had already had some useful knowledge about industry operations and ecology before graduation. She thanked THEi for arranging her internship at 4As advertising agencies where she put what she had learnt into practice, assisting in the promotional campaigns of hotel and beauty care brands through the development of Facebook games and animations on social media platforms.

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) is a member of the VTC Group. It offers vocationally-oriented degree programmes across three faculties: Design and Environment, Management and Hospitality, and Science and Technology. The programmes are offered in areas where the VTC has strengths, and which are also growth industries not only in Hong Kong but also across the region. They feature the synthesis of knowledge acquisition and practical applications that enable students to grow into professionally-competent graduates. With its strong links with industry partners, THEi provides students with a vital platform for enhanced development.
