Applications open for VTC’s 2018/19 cohort of programmes, providing VPET study pathways from diploma to degree levels

Providing multiple study pathways, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is offering Secondary 6 students around 17,000 places in the 2018/19 academic year on more than 140 full-time Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma of Foundation Studies, Diploma of Vocational Education and Diploma programmes. The application period will run from this Friday, 24 November 2017 until 28 February 2018.

In 2018/19, the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) will offer 20 vocationally-oriented degree programmes. Among them, 12 will be covered by the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP). They are Fashion Design, Product Design, Landscape Architecture, Culinary Arts and Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Management, Horticulture and Landscape Management, Surveying, Sports and Recreation Management, Building Services Engineering, Multimedia Technology and Innovation, and Information and Communications Technology. Secondary 6 students admitted to these programmes will be entitled to subsidies ranging from HK$40,000 to HK$70,000 each. Interested students are welcome to apply for the programmes through JUPAS on or before 6 December 2017.

Member institutions of VTC, including the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), and the International Culinary Institute (ICI) will provide some 100 Higher Diploma programmes next year. Four new interdisciplinary Higher Diploma (HD) programmes will be available in the new academic year in response to the workplace demand for talent equipped with a flexible mindset and capabilities, namely HD in Financial Technology, HD in Public Relations and Digital Communication, HD in Music and Digital Entertainment Business Management, and HD in Arts and Cultural Events Management. As well as acquiring cross-disciplinary skills, students will be taught innovative and creative thinking, digital media knowledge and technologies and communications skills. Work-integrated learning and workplace immersive experiences will be strengthened.

The other six new Higher Diploma programmes are HD in Wine and Beverage Business Management, HD in Baking and Pastry Arts, HD in Culinary Science related to international cuisine, HD in Community Service Planning and Navigation targeting elderly care services, HD in Theme Park and Theatre Creative Technology and HD in International Business Management with Languages.

To cater to the different aspirations and progression needs of Secondary 6 students, VTC will offer eight Diploma of Foundation Studies programmes in addition to the Degree and Higher Diploma courses. The Civil Service Bureau has accepted the VTC Diploma of Foundation Studies as a qualification eligible for applying for positions in the civil service that require five HKDSE subjects at Level 2, including English Language and Chinese Language as an entry requirement. Moreover, the Youth College will offer 16 Diploma of Vocational Education programmes to provide seamless and flexible progression pathways for students and equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to pave the way for future success in their studies and career. Meanwhile, Hotel and Tourism Institute (HTI), Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI), International Culinary Institute (ICI) will provide eight employment-focused diploma programmes for entry into respective professions. Students can apply through the VTC Admissions Home Page (www.vtc.edu.hk/admission) and submit one application for programmes of the above institutes (see Annex 2). Applicants have to make their course choices on application and interviews will be arranged after the HKDSE next year if applicable.

Starting this Friday, 24 November, THEi, IVE, HKDI, HTI/CCI/ICI and the Youth College will organise Info Days at which campus tours, taster programmes, study and career consultations, programme briefings and parents’ talks will be arranged. These will help students and their parents better understand VTC programmes, which provide a good combination of professional knowledge and practical experience, as well as diversified study and career pathways.
