Secretary-General of United Nations International Maritime Organization Visits MSTI

The Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack LIM, visited the Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), today (5 September) and toured the campus to understand the local scene of vocational and professional education and training of the maritime industry. VTC Executive Director Carrie YAU and MSTI Director MAK Chiu-ki, met with Mr Lim and exchanged views and experience of nurturing skilled manpower for the maritime industry.

Accompanied by VTC Executive Director Carrie YAU, Mr Lim received a briefing on Hong Kong’s role as an International Maritime Centre and MSTI’s staunch support to the industry through the provision of comprehensive manpower training and seamless articulation pathway to attract young people to join the industry.

Impressed by the extensive range of programmes offered by MSTI, IMO Secretary-General Kitack LIM remarked, “While young cadets from MSTI can aspire to taking the helm as sea captains, they can also pursue a career in the port and logistics related industries.” MSTI offers diversified training programmes and opens up opportunities for graduates to take on positions including technical engineer, as well as ship and board management professionals in the industry.

Located in Tai Lam Chung, Tuen Mun, the MSTI has a net area of 16,000 square meters, housing a variety of professional training facilities. During the visit, Mr Lim was introduced to MSTI’s various simulated facilities, including the Survival Drill Tank, Full Mission Ship-handling Simulator Centre and the Mock-up Bridge.

A specialised agency of the United Nations, IMO currently represents 172 member states with a mission of setting the global standard for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

The Maritime Services Training Institute(MSTI)is a member of VTC Group. Located at Tai Lam Chung, Tuen Mun, MSTI has been offering professional training for new entrants, local and foreign seafarers, and employees of marine-related and shore-based industry to meet the local standards and international requirements of the marine industry since 1988. The Institute provides pre-employment courses such as the Junior General Purpose Rating Course for Secondary 3 school leavers and the Higher Diploma Course in Maritime Studies for Secondary 6 leavers. MSTI also provides various mandatory safety training to meet local rules and regulations.
