| General Information |
| The Vocational Training Council (VTC) operates an <Engineering
Graduate Training Scheme> to help ensure that Hong Kong has an adequate supply of
well trained engineers. The scheme aims at bringing about adequate practical training
opportunities for engineering graduates and engineering students in sandwich courses to
enable them to complete their training as engineers and to attain professional status. To
provide incentive to both employers and trainees, the Council subsidizes the salary of
trainees in the scheme for a period of up to 18 months. The Council also helps employers
to recruit graduates for training and assist graduates in finding training opportunities. |
| The Engineering Graduate Training Scheme |
| The Engineering Graduate Training Scheme (EGTS) is intended to
provide engineering graduates and sandwich students, who are permanent residents of
Hong Kong, with up to 18 months subsidized practical training at a standard that will
be acceptable for the Corporate Membership of an approved engineering institution. A subsidy will be granted to a trainee being trained under an approved programme. It will be paid through his employer as part of his salary. For the purpose of the Scheme, priority will be accorded to granting of subsidy for programmes administered by local engineering institutions. The subsidy is to help employers meeting the high cost of training engineering trainees to the standard required by the professional engineering institutions, and will be reviewed annually. The current subsidy rate is $5,885 per month for graduate trainee and $3,500 per month for sandwich trainee. The subsidy period may comprise partly sandwich and partly post-graduate
training up to a maximum of 18 months. The maximum subsidy period under sandwich training
is 12 months. |
| Committee on Technologist Training |
| The Committee on Technologist
Training of the Vocational
Training Council is responsible for administering the <Engineering Graduate Training
Scheme>. The Committee is assisted by the Technologist Training Unit of the Council
in the implementation of the scheme. |
| Employers Eligible for the Scheme |
| Employers wishing to participate in the <Engineering
Graduate Training Scheme> may register their training scheme direct with the Hong
Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) or other approved engineering institutions. After
registration, employers will be required to submit an application to the <Committee
on Technologist Training> for approval. Alternatively, employers may apply
through the Vocational Training Council to register their training schemes with the HKIE.
The training programmes submitted must conform to the HKIE requirements for Scheme 'A'
training. Application forms can be obtained from the Technologist Training Unit of the
Council or download from the internet. Applications will be processed by
Sub-Committee on EGTS of the <Committee on Technologist Training>.
If approved, the decision will be conveyed to the employer. |
| Trainees Eligible for the Scheme |
| Engineering graduates and sandwich students of the following local courses are eligible to join the <Engineering Graduate Training Scheme>. |

| Allocation of Training Places | ||||||||||
| Each year, employers with approved schemes will be invited to
apply for training places under the scheme. The <Committee on
Technologist Training> will inform employers of the number of training places available to
them. |
||||||||||
| Monitoring of Training Progress | ||||||||||
| The training of each trainee in the <Engineering Graduate
Training Scheme> will be closely monitored by an engineering supervisor who is a
member of the approved engineering institution and preferably should be of the same
discipline as the trainee. He should hold a responsible position in the organization
providing the training. The engineering supervisor will be required to:
In organizations where suitable engineering supervisors are not available,
the <Committee on Technologist Training> will be glad to assist employers
in finding external engineering supervisor. |
||||||||||
| Training Log Book | ||||||||||
| Throughout the training period, trainees will be required to maintain training log books for examination by their engineering supervisors and the institutions concerned for membership purposes. The log books will also be inspected by Industrial Training Officers of the Vocational Training Council. |
| Training Reports |
| Employers will be required to submit to the Committee quarterly copies of the trainees' HKIE log book and final progress reports of their trainees. |
| Certificate of Completion |
