The Committee on Apprenticeship and Trade Testing of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the 2010 Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee Award Presentation Ceremony today (17 March) in recognition of the excellent performance of apprentices. Awards were presented to 12 outstanding apprentices and 18 apprentices of excellent performance in the automobile, electrical and mechanical, and building services industries. Among them, 2 were simultaneously presented the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Outstanding Apprentice Awards.
The 2 Sir Edward Youde awardees, CHOI King-chai of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation and LAI Wa-chun of REC Engineering Company Limited, were each presented with a cash prizeof HK$5,000. The remaining 10 outstanding apprentices took part in an exchange tour to Singapore, where they visited facilities and equipment of different industries and The Institute of Technical Education College West. LAI Siu-tong, one winning apprentice said the tour enabled him to learn the progression pathways and the education and training acquired under the vocational education and training system of Singapore. He found the trip a valuable learning opportunity that broadened his horizon and helped him better understand his aspiration and future direction.
The Apprenticeship Scheme is administrated by the Pro-Act Training and Development Centre, a member of the VTC Group, with a view to providing career development opportunities for young people. Over the years, the Scheme has trained up more than 50,000 professionals. In general, 90% of the apprentices who have completed training continued to work in their respective trades, well proving that the Scheme meets market needs. Awardees of the Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee Award scheme were evaluated through a rigorous selection process where contestants for the Award were first recommended by their employers, then received the onsite assessment by the Inspectors of Apprentices, and finally had to attend an interview by the Committee on Apprenticeship and Trade Testing.
