HKDI students showcase creativity at fur competition

Riding on the remarkable success of last year, students and graduates of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) again clinched a number of major prizes at the 2011 Hong Kong Fur Design Competition including championships of the Full Fur and the Fur Combination Categories. The two champions will represent Hong Kong to take part in the Remix International Fur Design Competition to be held in Milan, attesting to the international standards achieved by HKDI students.

7 awards were set aside for the competition this year, and 4 HKDI students of the Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and Product Development course walked away with 5 major awards, including the championship and second runner-up of the Full Fur Category, the championship and first runner-up of the Fur Combination Category and the Best Sketch Award, the last of which was won by the HKDI students for the third year. The outstanding results are testimony to the high standards of HKDI programmes which train up quality professionals continuously.

Sarah LAM, champion of the Full Fur Category, incorporated elements of modern architecture into her design, named “Whirlpool”. She said contemporary architecture was full of streamlined and whirling patterns, which she decided to adopt for her fur design by spraying brown whirlpool patterns onto a natural pearl-coloured mink coat to create the dizzying visual effects. The innovative design earned the commendation of judges.

CHUANG Fong-ting, another HKDI student, won 2 prizes altogether, including the championship of the Fur Combination Category and the Best Sketch Award. Fong-ting often drew her inspiration from everyday life. This time she was inspired by the trees on the roadside and chose the growth of roots as her theme for the two pieces of work. The champion piece of the Combination Fur Category was a zip front dark brown and camel mink cape trimmed with knitted cable patterns that exuded elegance. The Best Sketch piece was a belted short-sleeve mink coat in camel and brown colours, accented with fox collar and hem that looked contemporary.

The two championship winners would be sponsored a one-week attachment to a Copenhagen furrier on top of the scholarships and trophies. They were to compete with other contestants over the world in the Remix International Fur Design Competition to be held in Milan later.

Apart from the above awards, HKDI student CHAN King-hei won the first runner-up of the Fur Combination Category with his work “Concrete Jungle”, which was inspired by the phenomenon of mental illnesses in cities. He was awarded a trophy and a scholarship worth HK$4,000. His work was a grey fur coat of silver fox and raccoon covered with satin symbolising city men being holed up in the concrete jungle and suffering from mental illnesses as a result of suppression. LAU Wing-tung, another HKDI student, also chose whirlpools as her theme and won the second runner-up of the Full Fur Category. She featured a sleeveless long fur top in alternate patches of turquoise and grey colour named “Vortex”. She was awarded a trophy and a scholarship worth HK$3,000.

The annual Hong Kong Fur Design Competition is organised by the Hong Kong Fur Federation to provide a platform for local budding talents to showcase their design flair. A total of 247 entries were received this year from which 31 were shortlisted (19 for the Full Fur Category and 12 for the Fur Combination Category). The future-focused theme of “Fur-Inception” this year was aimed at encouraging designers to break new grounds in fur design.
