The renowned University of Warwick, UK, held the WMG Graduation Ceremony 2018 last Saturday (21 April 2018) to mark the conferring of Master’s and sub-qualification degrees on 50 graduates from Hong Kong, the Mainland and Korea. Industrial Professorship and Fellowship were also conferred to four distinguished personalities at the ceremony in recognition of their significant contributions to the academic and the industrial sectors.

The ceremony was officiated by Professor David MULLINS, Director of External and International Relations, WMG, The University of Warwick, and graced by the dignified and esteemed presence of Mr Jeff STREETER, Director of British Council, Hong Kong.

Having endeavoured to pursue a study at the WMG School for Professional Development (the WMG School), jointly established by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) and The University of Warwick, 32 students from the Programme and Project Management, International Technology Management, and Service Management and Design programmes are entitled to the Master’s and sub-qualification degrees awarded by the University this year. The ceremony was embellished by the participation of 18 graduates from the WMG overseas partner institutions. Graduates from these WMG overseas partner institutions were presented the degrees by Professor David MULLINS, Director of External and International Relations, WMG.

In recognition of the contribution from distinguished personalities to the academic and the industrial sectors, Industrial Professorship and Fellowship were also conferred at the ceremony. The University of Warwick appointed The Hon Andrew LEUNG Kwan-yuen, President of the HKSAR Legislative Council, as Industrial Professor; Ms Clara CHAN Yuen-shan, Vice-Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and Executive Director of Lee Kee Holdings Limited and Dr Raymond LEUNG, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Altai Technologies Limited, as Industrial Fellows. Dr Lewis LUK Tei, President of Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorneys, was also re-appointed as Industrial Fellow.

To encourage students to strive relentlessly, a number of scholarships are offered by the WMG School, including the Full Tuition Fee Scholarship, which is open for applicants from local and overseas universities who have obtained first-class honours degrees in their undergraduate studies, or achieved outstanding, recognised accomplishments in their professions. This year, CHAN Tsz-kin, student of MSc in Programme and Project Management, was awarded the Full Tuition Fee Scholarship, earning a complete wavier of the tuition fee and the registration fee for his study at the WMG School.

In support of the transformation to a knowledge-based society and the call for life-long learning, the WMG School has offered a one-year full-time Master’s degree programme in Programme and Project Management. The programme encompasses project planning, management and control, project financial management, and human resources management. The WMG School has also offered the MSc in International Technology Management that extensively explores how to harness development of enterprises and their businesses by leveraging innovative technologies. Tailored for personnel in the fields of legal, engineering, technology and product design, the programme aims at enhancing the competitive edge of businesses.

To provide a more diversified choice for further study, the WMG School has offered another Master’s degree programme in Service Management and Design since September 2016. The course emphasises the latest development in the professional areas of systems, processes, technology design and management, and assists students in enhancing their own market competitiveness.

One of the features of the WMG programmes is that The University of Warwick will send its teaching staff from the UK to deliver the modules of the programmes at VTC. The programmes also provide students with an opportunity to attend one to two modules on the campus of The University of Warwick in the UK or other WMG partnering universities in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cyprus with no additional tuition fee. The one-year full-time training mode aside, a more flexible two-to-three-year part-time mode is offered to in-service students. The pedagogical approach consists of face-to-face lectures, exchanges with industry veterans, and case studies that combine theory and practice.
