Students of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) always emerge with flying colours in local design competitions. Only recently was a student presented the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award by the Hong Kong Design Centre and a group of students awarded the championship of the Installations category of DETOUR 2011, an activity of Business of Design Week. The excellent results speak volumes about the high standards of the HKDI students.  
 
Lamb TSE, current graduate of the Higher Diploma in Product Design course, HKDI, was presented the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award this year, which won her a scholarship worth HK$250,000 for overseas study. This was the third design prize Lamb won this year. Last month, her washing basin and faucet set design named “Pond and Pine”clinched the design concept prize of the prestigious red dot design awards, which was hailed the Oscar of the design profession. HKDI students won the prize two years in a row. Lamb also won the second runner-up of the Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition this year with her work entitled “Stone”.     
 
Lamb was pleasantly surprised by her thrice win and said she would continue to explore her way in her design journey. Particularly interested in the use of different materials, and the design of daily tools and aids, she hoped to further her study in ceramics and design of bathroom fitting and sanitary ware. She planned to make use of the scholarship to pursue product design related courses overseas to broaden her horizon.      
 
6 students of the Higher Diploma in Interior Design course of the HKDI won the championship of the Installation category in DETOUR 2011 organised during the Business of Design Week with their work named “Tornado”. They were funded HK$100,000 by the organiser to turn their design concept into a large installation art piece measuring 3x3 metres in height and width, which is now on display in the Former Police Married Quarters on Hollywood Road.    
 
LO Ding-hong, a student representative of the winning team said, as the theme of the competition was “Use-Less”, they used waste plastic bottles as materials to design an art installation named “Tornado” to appeal to the public on the importance of eco-living. Their work used an iron frame in arc form as the skeleton and mounted on it over 10,000 plastic bottles. With the aid of lighting effects, the feeling of an upheaval was conveyed. Lo said the team members stressed the spatial effects and interactivity. Visitors can go into the installation and put a wish message into the plastic bottles in person to express their longing for eco-living.  
 
The Young Design Talent Awards are created by the Hong Kong Design Centre with a view to nurturing the design abilities of designers and providing support to the cultivation of design talents. Outstanding young designers and design students are sponsored to receive training or attachment overseas. DETOUR 2011 was one of the activities organised by the Business of Design Week from 25 November to 11 December. Through an exciting mix of exhibitions, installations, performances, conferences, workshops and forums, together with a host of satellite events around town, the event brought together a lineup of creative concepts that stimulated conversation and inspired eco-living.
