The Vocational Training Council (VTC) welcomes the new initiative announced in this year’s policy address on establishing the International Cuisine College (ICC) to train up excellent manpower in culinary art, and wine and hospitality-related sectors. The new College to be set up under the VTC will admit its first cohort of students in 2014/15 academic year and construction of the new campus is expected to be completed in 2015.
The ICC will offer a wide spectrum of programmes in international cuisines including European, the Mediterranean, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Asian. Programmes on food and wine pairing, sommelier and other wine-related courses will also be offered to promote the development of Hong Kong as a wine hub. MICE-related (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) programmes will be featured as well to train new blood required by the tourism industry of Hong Kong.
Dr The Honourable Andrew LEUNG, VTC Chairman, said “Hong Kong receives tens of millions of tourists every year. To strengthen Hong Kong’s reputation as the Gourmet Paradise, we must keep up with the industry demand for professional chefs proficient in international cuisines. The ICC to be established will train up quality manpower to promote the growth of the tourism, catering, retail and wine industries. Buttressing Hong Kong’s position as the Gourmet Paradise and an education hub, the ICC will be instrumental in raising the competitiveness and long-term development of Hong Kong.”
The ICC will provide about 2000 training places annually to offer multiple progression pathways for young people to realise their potentials and turn their interests into a reward career. Among the 2000 training places, 400 will be pre-employment opportunities with the remaining 1600 for in-service personnel, all leading to awards from certificate, diploma to higher diploma. The pre-employment programmes target secondary school graduates with some also suitable for Secondary 3 school leavers. Students can choose to move up the seamless progression pathways provided by the VTC for attaining qualifications up to degree level.
Dr The Honourable Andrew LEUNG said, “Over the past years, the Chinese Cuisine Training Institute and the Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre have successfully trained up professionals needed by the catering and tourism industry. Our graduates enjoy close to 100% employment rate.” He remarked that with the rich training experience of the two institutes, their state-of-the-art infrastructure and close collaboration and partnership with the industry and international culinary art institutes, the future ICC would create even better synergy for the nurture of talents for the catering industry of Hong Kong, which would in turn promote the culinary art culture locally.
Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council(VTC)is the largest vocational education, training and professional development group in Hong Kong with some 230,000 students and trainees each year.
