    Not quite the same nerd

Many people believe a computer buff always gets immersed in computer games and the Web and is socially awkward. But Kitty TSE is different. She made good use of her passion for the computer to win her a scholarship to study overseas that would enable her to pursue her dream to become a computer engineer.

Kitty took a class on computer game production at Primary 6 and got the first taste in developing a game with Flash. Since then she has been hooked to computer programming. Upon completion of Secondary 7, she took the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering course offered by the IVE to go full steam in pursuing her interest. With her excellent performance in studies and attachment training, Kitty has been awarded a total of 6 scholarships including the Alistair Harvey Foundation Scholarship that will send her to further her studies in the UK. She is due to enter the second year of a degree programme in computing science offered by University of Birmingham.

During her years at the IVE, Kitty has learnt a lot on computer programming and has developed programmes for various types of systems like online purchase and transaction systems. What impressed her most was her summer attachment in an architectural firm during which she teamed up with others to develop the human resource management system of the firm. She said, “It was not easy to develop from scratch a human resource management system for a firm with over 1,000 staff. Apart from IT knowledge, we had also to understand thoroughly requirements of the firm, be flexible and possess good communication skills. Finally her team carried off the task in developing a system which could track staff members’ skills and professional expertise within a short time that facilitated the firm to search the right man for a job. Their system even won an attachment award.

Determined to enter the information technology world, Kitty hopes to make use of technologies to assist those in need like the search for missing persons system developed by Google following the Japanese tsunami that helped out their relatives. Kitty considered this the best example of optimising the use of technologies. She hopes that she will be able to develop more computer programmes with her knowledge and skills to benefit more people in the future.

During the study of the higher diploma programme, Kitty TSE won a total of 6 scholarships, including the Alistair Harvey Foundation Scholarship and the VTC Outstanding Student Award.
Outside classroom, Kitty was a VTC Student Ambassador and actively took part in various types of activities to broaden her horizon.
