HKDI students shine in Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong

It is a dream of many to possess the supernatural power to travel through time. CHAN Ying-wai, a student of the Higher Diploma in Animation, Comics and Visual Effects of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), was one of them. He has been fascinated with time travel since he was small. His creativity drove him to draw up a comic hero, “Time Traveler Laplace’s Demon”, who upheld justice in the world of time travel. His comic work won him the championship of the student group of the Art Idol – HK Figure Design Competition.

Ying-wai recalled, “I remember when I was small, my teacher mentioned to us the Theory of Relativity and the concept of time. Although I had only a little understanding, I had the idea that the world would be thrown into chaos if the ability to time travel was achieved by all. Since then I began to have the picture of a hero on my mind who stood up to anyone breaking the law and order of the time travel space like the police.” Building on the concept and coupled with his consummate computer drawing skills, he created the hero with the unique extra sensory powers to right the wrongs when the world was thrown into disarray by human beings to prevent them from changing history through time travel. Ying-wai said his victory this time was a huge recognition of his design talents and he hoped to develop more comic works and become a comic artist in future.

LAU Kai-ling, a fellow schoolmate of Ying-wai, won a merit prize in the same competition with her work, “Pagba Gyaltsen”. A temple worshipping the gods, Pagba Gysltsen has stood on the mountains of Tibet for more than 1,800 years. Together with the other 11 temples, they shouldered the mission of dispelling the disasters created by the evils in Tibet. Kai-ling has all along had a special liking for the Tibetan culture and architecture. When developing her comic hero, she personified the Tibetan temple and turned the windows and beams rich in Tibetan characteristics into different body parts and clothing of the comic figure.

Carrying the theme of “The Heroes of Childhood Dream Alliance”, the Art Idol – HK Figure Design Competition offered the contestants an opportunity to design their dream heroes at the young age. As part of the 13th Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong 2011, the Competition was divided into the open and student groups. The prizes were hotly contested especially in the student group with over 200 entries vying for the championship and 3 merit prizes.

LEUNG Cheuk-yiu, again another student of the same course, also emerged with flying colours in another comic competition. She developed the “3 Brothers” comic story, which won her the grand prize of the student group of the iPhone Comic Supernova Competition. Her work used the classical children’s story New Clothes of the Emperor as the background. Desperate to raise money to pay the medical bills of their ailing parents, the 3 brothers tried to swindle the prize money out of the emperor by coming up with invisible clothes which they claimed could only be seen by the wise. When the scam was discovered, all the 3 brothers, out of love for each other, fought to shoulder the blame all by onself. When the emperor learnt the truth at last, he decided to help them to clear their debts and placed them in important positions in the royal office. Cheuk-yiu hoped to inspire students to develop a responsible outlook for life: “Many a time people tried to shift the blame to others when they were found to have committed something wrong. I wish to bring out the love for one’s own siblings and the idea of shouldering the responsibility of one’s wrongs.”

The iPhone Comic Supernova Competitionwas organised by the Hong Kong Comics & Animation Federation with a view to identifying budding talents for the future development of the electronic comics. Divided into the 4 groups of open, tertiary, senior secondary and junior secondary, one grand prize winner was selected from each group. The work of Cheuk-yiu will be uploaded to the Hong Kong Comics App of the smartphone apps of the Hong Kong Comics & Animation Federation for the browsing of the public.

The winning works of the Art Idol – HK Figure Design Competition and the iPhone Comic Supernova Competition will be displayed at the Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong 2011 held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for a row of 5 days starting today (29 July).
