The Opening Ceremony of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2012, held last Saturday (4 August), kicked off the contests in 22 trades, putting to test the professional skills of young people. Winners may undergo further training and be selected for the WorldSkills Competition to be conducted in Germany next year to test their mettle with young professional around the globe.
Speaking on the Opening Ceremony, Dr NG Tat-lun, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Youth Skills Competition, said vocational education and training was important in training up the younger generation to support the development of Hong Kong industries and he hoped that the skills competition could help raise their professional standards. He further said, “While young people continue to develop their professional skills, the skills competition provides a platform for them to apply what they have learnt and encourages them to go forward to attain the pinnacle of skills learning.”
The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition covers the five major areas of “Construction and Building Technology”, “Information and Communications Technology”, “Creative Arts and Fashion”, “Manufacturing and Engineering Technology” and “Social and Personal Services”. The competition this year is divided into 22 trades, including Web Design, Mechatronics, Western Cookery, Beauty Care, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Electrical Installations and the newly added Restaurant Service. The Floristry Trade contest was held concurrently with the Opening Ceremony. Contestants of the trade had to complete within specified time the three assignments of bouquet for bride and corsage for bridegroom, home vase floral design and desktop garland to showcase their personal techniques. At the end LAW Nga-man of the decoration and floristry profession won the competition.
Another objective of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition is to scout for talents to represent Hong Kong to take part in the Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu Youth Skills Competition to be held in November this year and the 42nd WorldSkills Competition to be held in Leipzig of Germany in July next year. There the participants can flex their muscle while at the same time learning from the strengths of other regions and expanding their horizon. Hong Kong first took part in the WorldSkils Competition in 1997 and has since won two gold, one silver, four bronze and 29 Medallions of Excellence.
The biennial WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition is jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council, the Construction Industry Council, the Clothing Industry Training Authority, and the Industrial Centre of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for young people under 21.
