The Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the presentation ceremony of the VTC Outstanding Students Award Scheme today (2 May) to recognise 9 students who excelled in the areas of academic studies, extracurricular activities and community service (See appendix for the awardee list). Coming from different disciplines, the 9 awardees were nominated by their respective department heads. Each was awarded a scholarship of HK$10,000.
With a strong passion for design and drawing, HO Yu-yan, an HKDI student of Higher Diploma in Fashion Design, was a frequent winner in local and international design competitions. Her designs were awarded prizes and exhibited in Europe, the USA and Taiwan. She had also been invited to Poland for art exchange. The talented Yu-yan was particularly fond of fashion design. When she was a child, she had designed clothes for cartoon characters. Her dream was to create a fashion brand to demonstrate her own style. Yu-yan said, “After almost two years of study at HKDI, I have taken a great step forward in realising my dream. The Outstanding Student award has affirmed my talent, giving a boost to my confidence in pursuing my dream as a fashion designer.”
Information technology is not something exclusive for boys. TSE Po-ting, an IVE student of Higher Diploma in Software Engineering, designed her first computer game programme at primary six. While at IVE, she had developed a human resources system for a company during her work attachment. Her excellent performance during attachment and in academic studies had earned her a number of scholarships, including the Alistair Harvey Scholarship which would sponsor her to study a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Computer Science in the UK. Being recognised as a VTC Outstanding Student was indeed encouraging to Po-ting. She was determined to become a distinguished software engineer in the future and contribute to society.
On the award presentation ceremony, Dr NG Tat-lun, Chairman of the VTC Vocational Education and Training Advisory Committee, said the award scheme, in its 7th year, aimed to commend the excellent achievements of students and encouraged them to take an active part in extracurricular activities to broaden their horizon.
