Q1. What are the progression pathways for VTC Higher Diploma graduates?
A1.

VTC Higher Diploma graduates may apply for SHAPE and PEAK (members of VTC Group) full-time and part-time top-up degree programmes in collaboration with numerous internationally renowned local and overseas universities. They can also choose to pursue further studies in local universities through the non-JUPAS Admission Scheme; or pursue studies at overseas universities. From 2014 onwards, the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), a new member institution of the VTC, will admit higher diploma graduates with a credit award into the senior years of the degree programmes.

 


Q2. Can applicants use public examination results with different years of award in the application for admission to VTC programmes?
A2.

Applicants can use results on a public examination with different years of award in the application. The best grade for any subject of multiple attempts will be considered in the assessment for admission.

 


Q3. If applicants do not have Five HKDSE subjects at Level 2 or above (including English Language and Chinese Language), to which Post-secondary 6 programmes of VTC can they apply for admission?
A3. Applicants may apply for New Foundation Diploma Programme offered by IVE / YC of which the general entrance requirements are "Three HKDSE subjects at Level 2 or above (if English Language is not one of these subjects, applicants are required to attain Level 1 in it); or Equivalent".  They may also apply for Diploma in Vocational Education Programmes offered by YC of which the general entrance requirement is "Completion of Secondary 6 (NSS curriculum)."

 


Q4. Can applicants combine public examination results of the old and new academic structures in application for admission to the programmes?
A4. The public examination results of the old and new academic structures will NOT be considered in combination in the assessment for admission. Please refer to the Admissions Homepage for the entrance requirements of each programme.

 


Q5. Would Qualifications obtained in Mainland China / Other Non-local Qualifications be considered in the application for Post-secondary 6 / 7 programmes of VTC if applicants do not have local qualifications?
A5.

Qualifications obtained in Mainland China

  • Applicant who does NOT have Hong Kong public examination result and wish to apply with qualifications obtained in Mainland China --
    • applicant should have completed Senior Secondary 3 Education in Mainland China; and
    • assessment will be based on results obtained in the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE)#.
      (Please give relevant details and upload copies of the result slips during application.)
       
  • If applicant has obtained a TOEFL score or the result of IELTS, please give relevant details and upload copies of the result slips.
  • Applications will be assessed individually by the departments concerned.

# Applicants without NCEE result may apply for Diploma in Vocational Education Programmes.


Other Non-local Qualifications

  • Other non-local qualifications refer to academic qualifications obtained in secondary or tertiary institutions outside Hong Kong and Mainland China.
  • If applicant has obtained a result in GCSE, IGCSE or GCE O-level / A-level / AS-level examinations, International Baccalaureate (IB) or other overseas qualifications, please give relevant details and upload copies of the result slips.
  • If applicant has obtained a TOEFL score or the result of IELTS, please give relevant details and upload copies of the result slips.
  • Applications with non-local qualifications, including language qualifications will be assessed individually by the departments concerned.

 


Q6. For applicants holding HKALE and HKCEE results, would alternative language qualifications be considered in the application for Higher Diploma programmes if applicants do not have HKCEE Chinese Language qualifications?
A6.

If applicants meet the specific circumstances (Note), alternative HKCEE language qualifications (Grade E or above) would be individually considered by the departments concerned in their application for Higher Diploma programmes.

Note : The specified circumstances are :

  1. The applicant has learned Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education. This caters specifically to applicants who have a late start in the learning of Chinese Language (e.g. due to their settlement in Hong Kong well past the entry level) or who have been educated in Hong Kong sporadically; or
  2. The applicant has learned Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but has been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in our local schools.

Q7. For applicants holding HKDSE examination results, would alternative language qualifications be considered in the application for Higher Diploma programmes if applicants do not have HKDSE Chinese Language qualifications?
A7.

If applicants meet the specific circumstances (Note), results (Grade E or above) of Other  Language Subjects of the HKDSE (i.e. Category C subjects) would be individually considered by the departments concerned in their application for Higher Diploma programmes.

Note : The specified circumstances are :

  1. The applicant has learned Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education. This caters specifically to applicants who have a late start in the learning of Chinese Language (e.g. due to their settlement in Hong Kong well past the entry level) or who have been educated in Hong Kong sporadically; or
  2. The applicant has learned Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but has been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in our local schools.

Q8. For applicants holding HKDSE examination results, would alternative English Language qualifications be considered in the application if applicants do not have the required HKDSE English Language qualifications?
A8. Applicants who are in possession of the following English Language qualifications will be individually considered in the application :
  • Grade D in GCSE / IGCSE / GCE O-level English Language ; OR
     
  • Grade E in GCE A-level / GCE AS-level English Language; OR
     
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) :
    • a score of 500 (paper-based) / 173 (computer-based) / 61 (internet-based) in TOEFL (applicable to Higher Diploma Programmes)
    • a score of 425 (paper-based) / 113 (computer-based) / 38 (internet-based) in TOEFL (applicable to New Foundation Diploma Programmes); OR
       
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) :
    • An overall score of 5 (applicable to Higher Diploma Programmes)
    • An overall score of 3.5 (applicable to New Foundation Diploma Programmes); OR
       
  • Possession of 5 specific VTC’s Vocational English Module Certificates (applicable to Higher Diploma Programmes); OR
     
  • Possession of English Language result in International Baccalaureate (IB) will be assessed on case-by-case basis

 


Q9. In applying for programmes in IVE / HKDI / YC, what are considered as "Applications with Special Circumstances"?
A9.

Applications with Special Circumstances :
 

  • Applicants with a Disability
  • Mature Applicants

Applicants with a Disability

  • Applicants with a Disability refer to applicants with special educational needs or disabilities such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, physical handicap, speech impairment, intellectual disabilities, mental illness, autism, visceral disability / chronic illness, specific learning disability, attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder.
  • Applicant may be offered a place if he / she meets the entrance requirements  for the programme and satisfies the interview panel that he / she is likely to complete the programme successfully.
  • Please give details of the disability or special educational needs in the section on supplementary information for Special Circumstances and upload copies of documents regarding the disability.

Mature Applicants

  • Applicants aged 23 or above on or before 1 September 2012 and do not meet the entrance requirements for the Programmes may apply for admission as mature applicants.
  • Applications from mature applicants will be considered on an individual basis. They must demonstrate sufficient motivation, knowledge, potential and ability to make it likely that they would complete the programme successfully. Applicants will not have priority over other applicants, and only a limited number of places are offered to suitable mature applicants.
  • Please give relevant details in the section on supplementary information for Special Circumstances and upload copies of relevant documents.

 


Q10. What is the medium of instruction in IVE / HKDI / YC?
A10. The medium of instruction for IVE / HKDI / YC’s Post-secondary 6 & 7 programmes is English and may be supplemented with Chinese, as when and where required.

 


Q11. Can Non-local Applicants apply for admission to VTC’s full-time Post-secondary 6 / 7 programmes?
A11.

Non-Hong Kong residents who require a student visa / entry permit issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department to enter Hong Kong for the purpose of education are classified as non-local applicants. Please contact the VTC International Students Office for details of programmes offered to international or Mainland applicants in the 2012/13 academic year and admission-related matters.
