Q1. For applicants holding HKDSE examination results, what are the minimum entrance requirements?
A1.

For students applying on the basis of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), the minimum general entrance requirements are :

  • Chinese Language Level 3; AND
  • English Language Level 3; AND
  • Mathematics Level 2; AND
  • Liberal Studies Level 2; AND
  • One Elective Subject Level 2; or equivalent.

Notes :

  1. Some programmes may have other programme-specific or additional entrance requirements.  Please refer to Programmes at a Glance of this homepage for the entrance requirements of the programmes.
  2. Applicants who apply for programmes offered by the Faculty of Design are required to bring with them their original portfolio when they attend the interview.

 


Q2. For applicants holding HKALE results, what are the minimum entrance requirements?
A2.

For students applying on the basis of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) results, the minimum general entrance requirements are :

  • Grade E or above in HKALE Chinese Literature or HKALE (AS-Level) Chinese Language & Culture or Grade D in an HKCEE language other than Chinese and English; AND
  • Grade E or above in HKALE (AS-Level) Use of English; AND
  • One other HKALE A-Level subject / Two other AS-Level subjects at Grade E or above; AND
  • Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English Language and Chinese Language [HKCEE English Language taken in 2006 or before should be at Grade E or above in Syllabus B / Grade C or above in Syllabus A]; or equivalent.

Q3 Will interview be required?
A3

Interview is mandatory for all THEi programmes. All interviews are conducted in English.

 

 


Q4 Can applicants combine public examination results of the old and new academic structures in application for admission to the programmes?
A4 The public examination results of the old and new academic structures will NOT be considered in combination in the assessment for admission.  Please refer to Programmes at a Glance of this homepage for the entrance requirements of each programme.

 


Q5 Would alternative language qualifications be considered in the application if applicants do not have HKALE or HKDSE English Language qualifications?
A5

Applicants who are in possession of the following public examination results will be regarded as having met the required English Language requirements for admission :

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL);
    • Paper-based TOEFL : 550
    • Computer-based TOEFL : 213
    • Internet-based TOEFL : 79; or
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS):
    • An overall score of 6.

Remarks :
The TOEFL or IELTS results submitted must not be more than two years from the date of the test or examination and the date of commencement of study at the Institute.

 

Q6 For applicants holding HKDSE examination results, would alternative language qualifications be considered in the application if they do not have HKDSE Chinese Language qualifications?
A6

A Grade C or above in "Other Language Subjects" of the HKDSE can be used as an alternative of HKDSE Chinese Language Level 3 if the applicant :

  1. has learned Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education.  This caters specifically to applicants who have a late start in the learning of Chinese Language (e.g. due to their settlement in Hong Kong well past the entry level) or who have been educated in Hong Kong sporadically; or
  2. has learned Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but has been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in our local schools.

 


Q7 For applicants holding HKDSE examination results, would Category B (Applied Learning Subjects) and Category C (Other Languages Subjects) be considered as having met the minimum entrance requirement on elective subject?
A7

Category B – Applied Learning Subjects :

  • Relevant Category B subjects with a result of "Attained with Distinction" and "Attained" would be regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE Elective Subject at Level 3 and Level 2 respectively; and
  • A maximum of two Category B subjects would be counted for the purpose of admission.

Category C – Other Languages Subjects :

  • A Grade C or above in a Category C subject would be regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE Elective Subject at Level 3;
  • A Grade D or E in Category C subject would be regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE Elective Subject at Level 2; and
  • A maximum of one Category C subject would be counted for the purpose of admission.

 


Q8 For applicants holding HKALE results, would therebe any module exemption if they are admitted to the programme?
A8 For applicants admitted on the strength of their HKALE results, an advanced standing of up to a maximum of 15% of the total credit points of the programme may be granted, depending on the HKALE subjects and the grades attained.

 


Q9 In applying for THEi degree programmes, what are considered as "Applications with Special Circumstances"?
A9

Applications with Special Circumstances :

  • Applicants with a Disability
  • Mature Applicants

Applicants with a Disability

  • Applicants with a Disability refer to applicants with special educational needs or disabilities such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, physical handicap, speech impairment, intellectual disabilities, mental illness, autism, visceral disability / chronic illness, specific learning disability, attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder.
  • Applicant may be offered a place if he / she meets the entrance requirements for the programme and satisfies the interview panel that he / she is likely to complete the programme successfully.
  • Please give details of the disability or special educational needs in the section on supplementary information for Special Circumstances and upload copies of documents regarding the disability.

Mature Applicants

  • Applicants aged 25 or above on or before 1 September 2012 and do not meet the entrance requirements for the degree programmes may apply for admission as mature applicants.
  • Applications from mature applicants will be considered on an individual basis. They must demonstrate sufficient motivation, knowledge, potential and ability to make it likely that they would complete the programme successfully.  Applicants will not have priority over other applicants, and only a limited number of places are offered to suitable mature applicants.

Q10 What is the medium of instruction in THEi?
A10

The medium of instruction for degree programmes is English and may be supplemented with Chinese, as when and where required.
